OUR VOLUNTEERS
(As from May 2010)
Liz Dent (Co-founder Honorary President)
Liz founded AMEND in 2002 with her daughter Emily Fazal, after finding that all three of her children and herself had inherited MEN1. She juggles her work for AMEND with looking after her husband, children, dog and horse. Liz is a great believer in positive thought and complementary therapies, and has found these to be of great comfort since the removal of her parathyroid glands and her pancreas (she is now a diabetic).
Emily Fazal, (Co-founder Honorary Vice President)
Emily has MEN1, and founded AMEND in 2002 with her mother, Liz Dent. Married in 2004, Emily is a trainer for the NHS fitting in her work for AMEND whenever she can. Like her mum, Emily has had her pancreas removed, leaving her diabetic. She has also had 2 of her parathyroid glands removed and currently has a prolactinoma of the pituitary gland. |
Jo Grey, (Chief Executive Officer, Website Administrator) Jo has MEN2a, and is an “at-home” mum of 2 young children, the youngest of whom also has MEN2a. She is lucky to be able to devote a good deal of time to all things AMEND, was instrumental in the production of AMEND’s patient information books and produces the quarterly newsletter. Jo was diagnosed with MEN2a in 2000 and has since had both adrenal glands, her parathyroid glands and her cancerous thyroid and shoulder removed. Contact Jo at

Janet French (Secretary & Membership)
Janet has MEN2a and is the mother of AMEND’s Chairperson, Jo Grey. Although diagnosed after her daughter, she has nevertheless also had both adrenal glands, parathyroids and her cancerous thyroid removed. Now retired, Janet uses her considerable experience in administration to deal with all our membership enquiries, database and many other compliance issues. Contact Janet at

Sam Meadows (Treasurer)
Sam lives in South Yorkshire with his three young children. He feels fortunate to have had a nearly normal and problem-free life despite having been one of several family members diagnosed with MEN1 by genetic screening in 1994. Sam has had his parathyroids and just over half of his pancreas removed but has found that it makes very little difference to his life, which encompasses all things sporty, including participation in regular triathlons. |
Vivienne Martin (MEN2b Officer)
Vivienne has two grown up daughters and a dog and enjoys working as a Teaching Assistant in a Middle School with children aged 9-13. Her hobby is volunteering with the St. John’s Ambulance which she has done now for over twelve years. Vivienne wanted to become involved with AMEND as her eldest daughter has MEN2b. She is keen to be able to give others support in coming to terms with this rare condition. |
Karen (Telephone Counsellor)
Karen is a qualified 'person-centred' (Humanistic approach) counsellor who follows the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Guidelines. She has personal experience of MEN within her family. Karen provides a confidential counselling helpline for our fully registered members and their families (over 18 years of age). Karen is also a contributor to our newsletters and provides emotional support to AMEND volunteers as well as one-to-one counselling by prior appointment at our AGM & Information Days. Contact details for Karen are provided upon registration.
